Kinetics Sculpture Race AWARDS
2010 Longmont Kinetics Awards
Legitimately judged by esteemed judges, and rigorously computed on the Wizard’s Kinetic Computer - The Category and overall event awards!
Overall Grand Prize
1. Who Are These Clowns? ONE $1 coin
2. Mind Your Bees And Q’s TWO $1 coins
This is the all-encompassing, overall, grand-daddy of them all. The best of the best. The weirdest of the weird. The fastest of the fast. This award goes to the team that that excels in all four of the major Kinetics categories - costumes, sculpture, team style, and engineering plus had a fast finishing time. Oh yeah - not to be scoffed at, just behind the big deal is second place.
Sculpture
1. Mind Your Bees And Q’s
2. Up-A-Chuck
They may start as thrift-store discards, garage-sale treasures, or strange things found in the garage, but the winning teams could see it in their minds - the most creative, perhaps wackiest, best theme-fitting, highly attractive - - in short, the perfect sculptures. These awards go to the team that uses this Kinetic opportunity to construct the most spectacular (and second-most spectacular) works of art possible ... that still functions ... kind of.
Engineering
1. Who Are These Clowns?
2. Mind Your Bees And Q’s
The main frame is connected to the drive train. The drive train is connected to the paddlewheel. These awards go to the top two teams whose sculptures not only glide effortlessly across land and water, but which also contain innovative mechanical ideas that actually work. After all, this is Kinetics, and yes, mechanics do count.
Costumes
1. Who Are These Clowns?
2. Mind Your Bees And Q’s
Halloween on water, Mardi Gras in May, this ain’t no amateur costume party, this is Kinetics! What other event can produce giant neon insects, huge moving toilets, and baby bumblebees? These awards go to the teams that come up with the two most unique, creative, and out of this world costume themes.
Team Style
1. Mind Your Bees And Q’s
2. Who Are These Clowns?
There’s something indescribable about teams that has it all together. They have the sculpture, the theme, and even the costumes. What separates them is that certain X-factor, that certain quality about them that makes men green with envy and women swoon. This award goes to the team that makes everyone take notice; you might think of it as the top “performance art”
This year’s discretionary awards include: Randomly made up in the dead of night by the Great Kinetic Wizard, and which seemed like good ideas at the time - the discretionary awards!
Hobart Brown’s Lifetime Achievement Award – Steve Cohen
Swifty Shifty – Who Are These Clowns? – Always a traditional award in the Colorado Kinetics, this award goes to the team who crosses the finish line first. In case of a photo-finish the award will be split in half.
Comic Relief – Zebra Muscles Are Spreading The Love – This award goes to the team that made our staid and professional Judges crack the biggest smile, and maybe actually laugh.
The Big Picture Award – Jump A Shark – This award goes to the team that just looks the best overall; the costumes, sculptures and style all fit perfectly together to produce the most memorable image.
What’s In A Name – The Longmonsters – This is the award for the best Named Craft. It’s usually really hard to judge because ALL the names are great! But, the team that gets this award really put some extra thought into it! Or else it just came to them in a dream. Whatever.
Murphy’s Law – Dr. Diabolical’s “Looks Heavy” Lakester – It looked like a great idea on paper, but c’mon, what was this team thinking? It’s obvious to our Judges that this idea didn’t have a chance of actually working, and everything that could go wrong did! In case of a tie by our judges, the award is decided by which team has the most pieces break off.
Keep it Simple Stupid – Send In The Clowns – Crafts don’t have to be able to orbit the moon to win an award! This award is for the simplest craft; but it has to actually work [to some extent].
Wizard’s Choice - Mind Your Bees And Q’s –The name sez it: The Great Kinetic Wizard gets to choose this award, no questions asked! (Bribes help!)
Mediocrity – The New Mexico Slow Riders – in the middle of the road - Borrowed from the Founding Event in California, this award is numerically calculated as the median craft ; half were better, and half were worse.
Virgin Awards - Dan Meas’s UN of Kinetic Communist Keystone Kapers
The Commodore’s Cup – Mind Your Bees And Q’s
The Gentle Soul – TDA 10
The Lowest Score – 8 Miles From Boulder
Best Bribe – Up-A-Chuck
Best Solo Effort - Zebra Muscles Are Spreading The Love
